On a sharp chart, is the performance selection under [chart attributes/type] the same as price performance under Indicators ? Do they both compare to $SPX ?

They are the same in terms of they measure the % change for the period of the chart. The chart type measures the symbol of the chart.
When you add Price Performance to the indictors section, it defaults in $SPX in the parameter. Left as is, that indicator would measure the % change of the $SPX for the period.
To get a comparison you would need to use a ratio symbol like AAPL:$SPX symbol colon symbol.
You can get the indicator to show the comparison of the chart's symbol by using $symbol:$SPX in the indicator parameter field. Then if you change the symbol for the chart, the indicator panel is updated using the current symbol in the comparison
You can also use a ratio symbol in the chart's Symbol box.
You can also use other special symbols to get other ratios or other industry or sector information to be used..
$Symbol:$Sector would show the % performance of the symbol vs its sector
$Symbol:$Industry would show the % performance of the symbol vs its industry group
You can mix and match the ratio symbols to look at $Industry:$Sector to see how the industry is performing vs its sector. $Sector:RSP to see how the symbol's sector is performing vs the equal weight SP500.
It's a very flexible approach to seeing over and under performance.
You can save the configuration to a named chartstyle so it's available to your use with a click0
