StockCharts.com Survey

Got an email link to a StockCharts user survey. I took it and left a lengthy note about the Tab, New Tab, New Tab issue with the scanning that was created in a release. The other questions were not really "shaping the future" type because, if they had done the survey BEFORE the prior release, we would probably not have a "new" marketcarpet, etc. Hey, who knows. I'm just one user. It may be a very popular feature. The survey should bear it out. If it's no popular then what? Are they going to put it back to the way it was? Like I said, not really a shaping the future type of survey.

  • I don't think I got that email, or I blew it away without opening it.

I wonder if that link would be transferable to here ? Or would that mess up the "hand-selected" character of the survey?

I'm thinking they probably look at who logs in the most, and what they do.

I added a suggestion for Candleglance, which I love - add buttons to change styles like the chart workbench. I really like candleglance for comparing stocks in an industry.

  • No idea. I have no connection with the developers. Couldn't hurt to submit it again.

You probably know this, or have figured it out, but you can change the Candleglance style by bringing up one of your other styles and saving it as Candleglance. Not as good as the button idea, which I really like, but ....

I do that to switch between time frames. But it is time consuming.

  • Sorry, I replied before looking at the previous posts. Actually, I had forgotten that I submitted the candleglance idea. I do still think it's a good idea, though. But I'm sure they'd be happy to hear from you, too. You do just get a form letter type reply to suggestions, though, most of the time. In the past I've sent in data corrections and they did respond 'live' to those.

I'm not sure what your complaint is about futures. They only offer a few end-of-day continuous contract quotes on commodities and then a few e-mini quotes, also end of day. I think I've seen this discussed before some time back - the data feed services from the various futures exchanges are very expensive and so far, at least I'm guessing there's not enough revenue from futures-interested subscribers to justify it (kind of makes sense on a stock site).

I haven't suggested it, but I would rather see live pre-market charts than live futures charts.

I'm now getting pestered on X by Bruce Fraser, trying to get me to sign up for the Wyckoff Master Class he has coming up. You know, so I can make a lot of money, TRADING BITCOIN. I replied that I was all set and thanks for offering me the opportunity. He replies with, send me your telegram number so I can keep you informed. So either Bruce Fraser has gotten hacked or impostered on X, or he's gone over to the side of investing I have little to no interest in.

    @lmkwin , tx.

I know Bruce Fraser is supposed to be an expert on Wyckoff, but I've read everything Wyckoff wrote, and I don't think it applies as widely as BF tries to apply it. Wyckoff's method was meant to identify "special situations", not universal principles of price movement. Prices can move without professional accumulation or distribution, and for very widely held large cap stocks, and index instruments based on them, I don't think it can happen. Nobody has so much capital they can cap rising prices or put a floor on falling prices (i.e. manage the phases of accumulation, mark up, distribution and mark down). For small and mid caps, it happens all the time. But even there, most stocks seem to rise and fall with the market, not because there has been an accumulation or distribution. I don't know much about bitcoin, but I'm skeptical.
  • lmkwinlmkwin ✭✭
I haven't read much Wyckoff other than articles and videos that describe his process. I have the Tape Reading Course from the 30's.

I've seen and read Weinstein material as well. I like Weinstein as his process is similar to Wyckoff, but uses simpler terms, and he tends to focus on weekly charts. I do like that Wyckoff indicates to use Point and Figure charts for further analysis. Weinstein never mentions them. So I have something in common with both of these technical analysis masters. I perfer to use weekly charts and I really do suggest that one should, at least, look at the PnF chart as part of their analysis process.

Compare Stockcharts to other similar platforms - Chartmill, Trading View, Think or Swim, etc. ... It seems like the others are running ahead, developing new and innovative features, faster than SC. My opinion is that most of the recent SC developments - ACP, Market carpets, market summary, options, etc - are tangents to general trading and are not used by the majority of the users.
  • azbazb
Even VectorVest seems like miles ahead ....
  • lmkwinlmkwin ✭✭
My opinions on things I've used.

I prefer StockCharts.com to Chartmill for charts. Scanning is easier on Stockcharts.com as well but Chartmill has a lot of additional filters available for sure. You can't scan for ROIC/WACC or EV/EBITDA in StockCharts.com. Both suffer from documentation issues.

ThinkorSwim is great as you can program your own customizations, but it's a bit clunky in many ways. I trade off ToS so it's my access to turning research into actions.

ACP, MarketCarpets, RRG are something that I don't use for much of anything.

Market Summary has benefits as it is accumulating useful information and links into a single distribution point. I view it similarly to the Advanced Scan Workbench, and Alerts workbench, where they added additional links that you can access right from that screen.

Will StockCharts.com ever become a replacement for those other services? Does it need to be exactly like everyone else? I'm happy enough with how it's working for me at the moment. They could certainly provide more graphical options for users to select from. For example, I'd like to have a Legend On/Off for each indicator and Overlay.

Will StockCharts.com rival the others? I don't think that is in the cards, unless they sell it, or add someone with the desire, vision, and resources to do so.

  • and not to fix or enhance stuff that they should, but aren't working on

The very first thing I reached out to them for, was when a buddy who uses this for scanning [and that is what I was hunting mainly only] asked me to try it, and then he showed me his "mind flow"

He took me to "Candle Glance" for the over view
The charts use the 50/200 yet at the bottom ??

    It says > Simple Moving Averages: 20-period / 50-period

That was one of the first things I reported, the first or 2nd week...yet no one seems to have the "working knowledge" to make a simple "text edit" on a simple "html page" in 2 years?

Default CandleGlance appear to be 20/50 now. I don't know about the history other than MY issues with the PnF Percent CandleGlance charts and the lack of decimal values in the Y axis. Most prices will display with 2 decimals, except the CandleGlance PnF Percent chart. They have the room, they have the values, they just don't display it. They do display it properly on the Traditional PnF CandleGlance. That's been for longer than I've been a member (about 10 years). Brick Wall indeed.

  • So I just logged in (Sunday 1:20 pm edt), clicked on Classic SharpCharts and there is a banner across the top of the page that they will no longer support classic charts. This after saying that they would never do away with it.

Very disappointed. Classic charts were simple and easy to use and all that I needed for research. New sharp charts is clunky and cluttered by comparison. ACP is stupid and far behind the competition - and even far behind classic for clarity and ease of use. I think they were going for a live trading platform with ACP, but it will never catch up to TOS or others.

Scanning is still useful, mainly because it is a good balance of simplicity and flexibility.

I'll have to decide if its worth it to keep it, or just go over to TOS altogether.

RELAX EVERYONE ... the "New Sharpcharts" is fine. I only use this and did not get any banner. I am guessing the "classic Sharpcharts" may be going away, but all you have to do is switch to the "New" one. They are almost identical. Nothing to worry about.
  • On reconsideration, it does says they will not longer "actively support" classic. That doesn't necessarily mean it is going away. It probably means if you have a problem Support will tell you to use new.

I have things set up the way I want them, and get what I need from classic, so that probably won't be a problem.

The New workbench is clumsy in my opinion.

ACP is overly clumsy. It already has integration to Tradier Brokerage for a few years now. Unlimited commission free trading.

Classic SharpCharts and "actively support" isn't something that I think that they are/were doing anyway. Perhaps the poorly worded banner will be addressed with a more expansive communication from the Director of Site Content. I may have mentioned that I believed that all of the personnel capable of working with the Classic system are long gone. New breed of programmers don't have those skillsets so they embarked on a new endeavor.

    Hi Guys,

Wow. I haven't been here in a while - my bad. Lemme try to correct a bunch of misconceptions I see here.

1.) Thanks for answering our surveys. Please understand, however, that our surveys are not the best way to suggest improvements to the site. The surveys are mostly for marketing purposes, and developers may not see those results.

2.) Similarly, the s.c.a.n. forum here is not the best way to suggest improvements to the site. The purpose of s.c.a.n. has always been for users to help other users find better ways to use our website, often when it comes to writing a technical scan for our ScanEngine. s.c.a.n. is the place for sharing tips, tricks, and discussions about how to use our current tools successfully. Quick reminder: s.c.a.n. is not actively monitored by StockCharts staffers (clearly). It is a User-to-User forum.

2.5) THANK YOU MARKD! YOU ARE THE s.c.a.n. GOAT IN MY EYES!

3.) OK, so where _is_ the best place for suggesting site improvements and reporting issues? It turns out the answer is StockCharts.com itself. Our Support Request page feeds directly into our ticketing system. https://stockcharts.com/support/techsupport.html

4.) "But I've submitted a request there and nothing changed." The reality is we have limited resources, and so we have to prioritize what we work on. When we prioritize changes, we consider a number of different factors including:
    • How many users are affected by the issue?
    • Are incorrect results being sent out?
    • How many different people have written in about this issue?
    • Is there a easy-to-use workaround?
    • Do we currently have free resources to work on this issue?
    • ...and much more.
Ultimately, prioritizing how we use our limited resources is my responsibility. It's something I'm focused on 24/7.

5.) "OK, but my issue still isn't fixed. How can I raise its importance in your eyes?" Definitely, resubmit the issue to our Support team. In your message, please take a moment to explain how the issue specifically affects your ability to use our site effectively. Ensure that you include clear, step-by-step instructions for reproducing the issue. A screenshot of the problem can be super helpful, too.

We make numerous improvements and bug fixes to the site every week. If your issue hasn't been addressed, and it's limiting your use of our site, please help us better understand its impact. Again, don't do that here. Do that by submitting a new Support request.

6.) Important: There's a difference between "SharpCharts" (our charting system) and "the SharpCharts Workbench" (the webpage you use to create and edit charts). SharpCharts isn't changing and isn't going away. What's changing is the Workbench that you use to create, review, and edit your SharpCharts. People need to shift from using the Classic Workbench, to using the new one.

7.) "Why? Don't fix what ain't broken!" OK, I hear you. However, the "Classic" workbench was initially written back in 2002. The web has changed a lot since then. Things like security, SEO, browser compatibility, mobile devices, AI, etc. etc. etc. have evolved dramatically since then. While it may seem like the Classic Workbench hasn't changed, under the covers, we have been continually updating and fixing it to meet these new requirements. Unfortunately, after 23+ years, we are losing the battle. This is the nature of software. Eventually, it becomes outdated.

Now, we have worked HARD to make the transition from the old Workbench to the new one as easy and as smooth as possible. We are still doing that. When people point out differences that impact their ability to use the new workbench (typically via a support request), we work hard to try and fix things. One of the HUGE benefits of moving to the new workbench is that it is much easier to respond to change requests since the code is better organized.

8.) Please don't fall into the trap of "This is different, therefore I don't like it." Change is the only constant when it comes to technology, especially Internet technology. If nothing changed, we'd still be using text displays with flashing cursors (punchcards anyone?). You have to give change a chance. Let us know what works and what doesn't - again, ideally, via reasonably detailed support requests - and we'll continue to improve.

9.) "Bah, humbug. I still hate the new system." Look, part of me totally understands. That's why I've forced our team to slow down the rollout of the new workbench, giving our users a year and a half to make the transition. We are now one year into that timeline. I expect that the old workbench will be retired officially at the end of the year. At this point, my strong advice is "Start using the new workbench ASAP and let us know if you have issues with it."

Thanks again for using our website. Your feedback is important to us. Please send it to us using the appropriate channel so we can understand it and work on making things better. And please continue to use this forum to share tips, tricks, and helpful advice on how to use our website.

    - Chip

    (OK, back to lurking...)
  • Hi Chip,

thanks for the update and the shout out.

Although my background is IT (and that's why I appreciate the scan language), I retired before the web took over. So I did not credit the support issues behind the classic workbench. I can certainly live with the new interface. It's actually a very good re-interpretation of the original. I just appreciated the look and feel of the classic.

I don't know how many support requests you get, but I think some of the frustration is that people sometimes don't get a "live person" response (at least that's what they report here). A signed response acknowledging that the request has been looked at, even if nothing can be done about it at this time, at might help people get past that feeling of being ignored.

Appreciate what you and the team are doing. Thanks !

  • lmkwinlmkwin ✭✭
I'm sure that Chip meant well by posting that lengthy talking points memo but about the only things that I can agree with is the 1st 3 (actually 4 because there is a 2.5 in there).

The rest doesn't explain why they still haven't fixed the incorrect data on the CandleGlance PnF Percent Y axis.

    He says

How many users are affected by the issue?
Are incorrect results being sent out?
How many different people have written in about this issue?
    Is there a easy-to-use workaround?
Do we currently have free resources to work on this issue?
    ...and much more.

I translate that to , they are working on other stuff that takes priority to making the current product the best it can be. Hey, only one, or a couple, users took the time to bring it up so ..... we need much more to take it seriously. It's not important enough...to us.

They did create a "mobile app" for StockChart users also......This app is available only for iPhone and iPad. For those of us android users...... c'mon get with it and buy an apple product for crying out loud.

So..... will they be fixing the Y axis scale display on the CandleGlance PnF Percent chart or not? The Y axis is the price scale and the prices are NOT showing on the scale. Displaying Charts without correct prices? 10 years of explaining to support. It's my problem. I know. I need to go with the flow.

The issue is support. It's not the users as Chip just disparaged. I think that this aspect is clearly communicated in the lengthy post from Chip. If they don't "understand" a request, they ignore it. If they are not in that mode, they ignore it. In Grayson's latest episode, he says "I got to yell at you guys". Apparently users are putting too many indicators on their charts and they aren't doing technical analysis correctly, according to him. He says you need to create a bunch of single indicator chartstyles and then flip through them so that you can FOCUS. Too many users are not focused correctly.

I must have misunderstood the intentions when they started with the "Technology Previews" and when Grayson said that the Classic system would not change, and then a year later, the President comes on this forum and calls me a technophobe for not thinking that they did a great job converting the existing gold standard Classic into the "New". And... he didn't say when they were planning on disappearing the Classic Workbench. Thanks Chip.

I'll have to start trying the New and then start putting in suggested improvements. I know that there are a bunch just from my initial reviews. Those Trashcans are a danger that they pulled over from their ACP work. Got them all lined up on the right side of the page, like many roads in my town on a Tuesday. Icons, ToolTips and Legends are another. I'll post my suggestions on the Suggestions to StockCharts thread we have here when I do.

I don't think putting that communication on the S.C.A.N. and not on the website and then going "back to lurking" sends an appropriate message that they want to "hear" from or communicate with users. But that's just me. The Ebenezer Scrooge of modern ways.
