Why are scans sometimes super slow?

Sometimes a scan takes a split second to give results, sometimes that thing spins around forever before a result appears. Is the server just busy, or are people who run too many scans being throttled to reduce their server usage or something?

    It could also be an ISP problem - yours or theirs are others that link yours and theirs.

    Other possibilities - your machine is receiving or doing software updates in the background, or if you have security software, it is running a scan in the background. If you have a Windows machine, you can check the resource monitor to see if something is hogging your memory or disk activity.
