Alerts

I'm pretty sure that you have answered this or a similar question in the past, but I haven't been able to find your response to the previous question, sorry.

Anyway, I can't get an alert to save portions of a scan. This is what I have saved in my scan. and [[[Close < [[High + Low] / 2]] and [Open > Close]] or [[Close < 1 Day ago Low] and [Open > Close]] or [[SMA(14) < 1 Day ago SMA(14)] and [Open > Close]] or [[SMA(14) < SMA(20)] and [Open > Close]] and [Close < [[1 Day ago High + 1 Day ago Low] / 2]]]

This is what I have saved in my alerts. and [[[Close < [[High Low] / 2]] and [Open > Close]] or [[Close < 1 Day ago Low] and [Open > Close]] or [[SMA(14) < 1 Day ago SMA(14)] and [Open > Close]] or [[SMA(14) < SMA(20)] and [Open > Close]] and [Close < [[1 Day ago High 1 Day ago Low] / 2]]]. As you can see, the alert will not save the plus sign between the High and the Low.

I have deleted all of the alerts with this paragraph in it and created a new alert with a new name and it saved but when you close down and open up again, the plus signs are not there, they are gone.

Comments

  • If I remember correctly, a scan won't save, or maybe it won't save correctly, if there is a syntax error.

Do you have advanced editor switched on, and are there any errors?
  • I copied and pasted your original and didn't get an error.

I deleted a couple of brackets thinking they were unnecessary, but it didn't like that, so I put them back as you see here. I re-spaced it and it saved OK and came back OK and got results both times.

I suppose it's possible some other part of the scan not included here could have been the problem.
  • Thank you. I have the same High + Low criteria in other alerts. I just checked one of them and the same thing has happened. The plus sign is removed in the alerts. I have also tried to create an alert with just this expression [Close < [[High + Low] / 2]] and the same thing happens. For some reason when I try to copy that expression into an alert it will appear to save it including the plus sign until I close it out and reopen it to find the plus sign gone. Can I ask, did you create an alert by naming it and saving it then close it out and go back to see if it was the same? My alerts will save everything but the plus signs.
  • I don't know about the scan editor. I will try to check that too
  • Advanced editor is on for scans, but I don't see it for alerts.

"This is what I have saved in my alerts. and [[[Close < [[High Low] / 2]] and...."

[[High Low] / 2]] needs a plus sign between High and Low.
  • Are you telling me that your alerts will not save the plus sign either?
  • I don't use the alert features.

It occurs to me you could use "range" instead of high+low.
  • Thank you. I had not thought about the range feature, and I may have to use it but I am pretty sure that the alerts should be able to save the plus signs. It is a canned scanning feature offered by SC. Thank you
  • I'm sorry to ask this question but the site has changed quite a lot since I was first trying to learn about writing scans and alerts. I may want to use range as you have suggested several times before but I am having a hell of a hard time finding any information about range. Can you point me in the right direction please?
  • I have not been able to find anything about range on the site yet but I did find in these discussions where you showed me how to write the same thing using range. Thank you again.
  • Good lordy. This may not be fixable. As I plug into alerts the new scan using range instead it will again save but when I close it out and come back to it, the plus signs are missing again with the syntax error message.
  • I will send this one to SC and see if I can get them to respond but I have looked at some of my other alerts and everyone of them that had a plus sign in it is bad. The alert has removed the plus sign in them all I think

    Here's an entry on range:

    https://chartschool.stockcharts.com/table-of-contents/glossary/glossary-r

    also here:

    This page is helpful, too.

    https://help.stockcharts.com/scanning-and-alerts/writing-scans#arithmetic_operators

It clearly shows the "+" is a legal arithmetic operator.

I just typed in two alerts using a + sign and what happened to you happened to me. So its a problem for support.
  • GM, thank you
  • I just tested this in Alerts with both a plus and a minus sign and they appear to save correctly. Thanks for spotting it and reporting it @dhall6938
  • GM, your welcome. I appreciate and enjoy chatting with you guys. If you didn't figure it out, I did contact support and this time they wrote back but never advised me that they had done anything, but it appears that they did fix it somehow, lol. The etiquette today is hard to get used to.
  • I should have said the lack of etiquette today
