industry SCTR

Hello, I noticed that the industry group now has SCTR.
On a specific chart list, would it be possible to rank by industry SCTR?

if i do: Rank by sctr.industry, it does not seems to work.

Thanks for your help.

  • I've not tried to rank by SCTR so can't tell. SCTR.industry appears in the listing of SCTR universes. What happens if you take off the .industry and just
    Rank by [SCTR] ?

If you have a list, you can also go to the Summary View and make sure the SCTR is showing in the columns. Then sort it that way. Click on the SCTR heading and it should sort in Descending order. Click it again for Ascending.

At the bottom of the page is a Number in Sorted Order button. Click on that and it should save the list in the order you have it.

This would also rank any non industry securities you may have in the list if they have SCTR's.

Apparently, sctr.industry is meant to sort a list of the $DJUSxx symbols that correspond to the Stockcharts sector and industry classification system. There are 104 of them, and each one corresponds to an industry in the "Sectors and Industries" drop down on the scan workbench page. Of course your list can be subset of the 104 if you want. There are more than 104 $DJUS indexes. I don't know if sctr.industry includes those also.

It does not (at least not so far) rank a list of stock symbols by their industries.

But, to find stocks in high sctr ranked industries, you could run an industry list scan first, then a symbol scan and sort by industry, as lmkwin suggested.

A list of the 104 industries is below. If you copy and paste it, you should be able to add them to a new empty list in edit mode using the "many" option - just paste what you have copied into the "many" window and click add.

When you display the list, it will be in alpha order. If you want to group them by sector, you have to edit the names with leading characters to get the order you want - say "10 01 Energy " for Integrated Oil & Gas ($DJUSOL), or "15 01 Materials" for Gold Mining ($DJUSPM). So the first two digits are the sector, the second two digits the industry.

  • Thank you. will do manually as you mentioned
  • The Rank By [SCTR] does work. So if you have a bunch of things in a list and the Industries are included you can rank by SCTR.

Something to keep in mind, is that the SCTR rating is based on the individual security and the universe the security comes from. So a 90 in SCTR.small is not the same thing as a 90 in SCTR.large in terms of performance. Only in performance vs the metrics used for SCTR INSIDE all of the components of the specific Universe.

To put it another way, almost every symbol is assigned to a "universe", large cap, small cap, etfs, industries, etc.

The SCTR score for any symbol depends on where it ranks within its own universe (as lmkwin correctly and helpfully points out).

If you sort a mixed list (industries, small caps, large caps, etfs) with "rank by sctr", you are not specifying a universe (e.g. .large, .small, .us.etf), so the scan engine puts the symbols in order by the sctr score for each symbol within its own universe.

(NOTE: So, since one universe might be doing better than another, e.g. large caps better than small caps, a small cap symbol with good score might not be doing as well as a large cap with a somewhat lower score.)

But, if you sort a mixed list by a specific sctr, e.g. "rank by sctr.industry", the industry symbols will appear at the top of the list, and the remaining symbols will appear in order by the sctr for their own universe, e.g. small cap, large cap - EVEN IF THEY ALSO BELONG TO AN INDUSTRY. So, you cannot rank individual stocks by the sctr scores for their industries. So, if you sort a list of only stock symbols using "rank by sctr.industry", the list will sort by the symbols' market cap universe sctr score (.large, .mid, .small), not sctr score for its industry.
  • Thank you for explaining about the universe
  • The SCTR list is quite helpful. Is it possible someone has an example of the "many' scan that I can take a look at? I'm new to stockcharts so i'm not sure how to set up the scan in the workbench properly.

Also, on another note, does anyone have any insight as to how I could create a clause for increased volume over a certain time period. I'm trying to zero in on equities that have broken out above their moving average and volume is at least twice as much on the breakout than the longer term moving average for volume.

I owe you all a lot of beer for this!!!

    Mike
  • The "many" isn't a scan. It is how you can take a list of symbols and put it into a ChartList.

When you create a chart list, at the bottom of the Edit list screen are a couple options to Add symbols to the list.

You can add them One at a time.

You can click on the Many tab and copy and paste in or manually type in several symbols. When you type them in, you need to put a comma between the symbols.

You can click on the Upload CSV tab and import a spreadsheet list in CSV format. The keys to remember on this option is that the CSV can NOT have a header row. Column A (all that is required) must be the Symbol. You can also import additional information on the symbol if you have it. Column B gets imported into the Name field. Column C gets imported into the Chart Notes field.
  • As far as your Scan question. In StockCharts they have a section called Pre-Defined Scans

    https://stockcharts.com/def/servlet/SC.scan

If you look through the list of scans there you'll see a lot of already configured scans. When you click on the results number, it will open the results for that scan. In the upper right is a link to Click here to Edit this Scan. When you do that it will open the Advanced Scan Workbench with the scan code filled in.

For example, the Strong Volume Gainers in the NYSE code is copied in below:

[type = stock] AND [exchange = NYSE] AND [Daily SMA(20,Daily Volume) > 40000] AND [Daily Volume > Yesterday's Daily SMA(20,Daily Volume) * 4] AND [Daily Close > Yesterday's Daily Close]

This gives you the basic framework you would need to Save it as one of your scans. Alter it and also save it as your scan.

So you could alter it to meet your timeframe and add any other types of filters into it to meet your needs.

If you get stuck, copy your code to the forum to ask for assist in troubleshooting and making your scan meet your needs.
  • ok. thanks a lot for the info.
